The Second Coming
Note that we distinguish the Rapture of the Church as separate from the Second Coming described here.
Introduction
The Second Coming, or Second Advent was hidden in the Old Testament along with the New Testament Church. During Jesus first coming, (the virgin birth Isaiah 9), he was presented to the Jews as their Messiah at the Triumphal Entry (Matthew 21). He was the rightful King of Israel, a descendant of King David through both parents. When the nation rejected Jesus as Messiah, the Church was born, and the Gospel was sent to the Gentiles through the Apostles. (Romans 11) When Jesus ascended to heaven the Angels tell us (Acts 1:9-11) of the return of Jesus, the Second Coming. This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven. The New Testament elaborates and expands on this, and the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Second Coming are now more clear.
The End of the Age
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is not like a singular event on the calendar. It is the culmination of an Age and the fulfillment of prophecy. (The First Prophecy). This Age began with the first man (Adam in Genesis 3), a Type of Christ (Romans 5:14), and ends with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ – the Second Adam (Matthew 24, Revelation 19)
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
- For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous (Romans 5:18)
- For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive (1 Corinthians 15:22)
- So also it is written, “The first MAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. (1 Corinthians 15:45)
The Heavenly Scene
Revelation 19 describes the scene in Heaven leading up to his coming and the event itself. There is celebration and rejoicing in Heaven as various groups of believers have just seen the eternal destruction of the AntiChrist, the False Prophet, and the False Religious System that martyred believers.
The Second Coming Described
See (Matthew 24, Revelation 19, Malachi 3:1-5)
It is Worldwide, Supernatural and its purpose is Judgement
For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28“Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.
What Signs accompany it?
But immediately after the tribulation of those days THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED, AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT, AND THE STARS WILL FALL from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30
How does Jesus, the Son of Man appear?
Matthew 24 – “And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory. 31“And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.
Daniel 7 – (Written 500+ years earlier) “I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. 14 “And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
The Nature of the Second Coming
There are many prophetic passages in the OT that refer to the Second Coming judgement together with the initiation of the Millennial Kingdom. (Ezekiel 37, Psalms 2, Psalms 96, Psalms 110, Isaiah 9, Jeremiah 23, Daniel 2, Daniel 7, Micah 4, Zechariah 2, Matt 19:28 )
Many of the passages will include:
- Battle and Judgement
- Beginning of the Millennial Reign
- Rejoicing and Celebration
Conclusion
The Second Coming of Jesus is the central and most anticipated event of not only the Endtimes, but of all the Old Testament promises made to Israel about the coming Kingdom of God.
The final chapter and verses of the Old Testament end with a prophecy of the Day of the Lord and the Second Coming. (Malachi 4)
For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff …. But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall.
